Description / Abstract: Smoking is the number one cause of preventable disease and death in Canada. Smoking also increases the risk of cardiovascular events, respiratory diseases, and cancers. Health care professionals can play a key role in offering accessible and trusted smoking cessation support to patients and members of the public. This program provides updated information on smoking cessation guidance and interventions, including prescribing pharmacological therapies, recommending over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapy, and advising on non-pharmacological measures to stop smoking. Also included are practical tips on counselling and motivational interviewing, as well as examples of how to effectively perform smoking cessation interventions. Those who complete this program may be eligible to bill provincial governments and third-party insurance payors for professional services related to smoking cessation, if the payor's criteria are met.
