- Description / Abstract
- In July 2024, over 7.8 million Canadians were age 65 years or older. By 2040 this is expected to increase to 10.7 million Canadians, representing close to 25% of the population. Age-related changes in immune function and physiology place older adults at increased risk of complications from vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs); however, vaccination coverage gaps leave many at risk. This lesson will equip pharmacists with knowledge of why older adults are at high risk of severe illness from VPDs, the systemic complications that can impact their independence and quality of life, and the importance of engaging them in vaccination discussions.
